Technology and medical advancements have made people with disabilities do the things that they cannot do regularly. People with an amputated leg can now walk without the aid of a walker or crutch; instead, they wear a prosthetic leg.
Dogs, too, can wear prosthetic legs!
Meet Blaze, the first-ever Blade Runner dog!
Blaze is from the Cayman Islands. North Shore Animal League America rescued him because he was an abandoned dog. He has an amputated left paw too.
North Shore Animal League America is an active non-government organization in the United States dedicated to rescuing dogs and cats all over the world. Established in 1944, North Shore Animal League America is the world’s largest and most comprehensive rescue and adoption organization based in New York state.
Blaze uses his amputated leg to walk; thus, it formed a fresh wound on the stump.
As soon as Blaze was rescued, they put a sock and a temporary prosthetic on his leg to prevent it from infection. He was brought in the United States so that the experts would check his condition.
Blaze went to the main office of North Shore Animal League America in Port Washington, New York. The experts designed a modern, custom-made prosthetic leg for him. He is the right candidate for a prosthetic leg because Blaze can still move with his amputated leg, he just needs support so that his leg won’t feel pressure and pain.
Dr. Mark Verdino, Chief of Veterinary Staff and Vice President of the North Shore Animal League America, said that Blaze is a happy and easy-going dog. They never had a difficult time with him because he is calm and friendly. He was able to make friends with all the people at the rescue center.
The medical team took a mold of Blaze’s leg. The team wanted to make a unique prosthetic leg for Blaze. They also experimented with different materials to create his prosthetics. It took weeks for them to conceptualize the design of his prosthetic leg.
When the customized prosthetic leg was tried on Blaze, it was perfect! Blaze didn’t have a hard time walking using the prosthetics. He walked like a pro!

Blaze would still undergo weeks of physical therapy to help him with his prosthetic leg. The experts will also monitor Blaze’s prosthetic leg if it needs further modification or adjustments. The people at the North Shore Animal Rescue League America is hopeful that sooner than soon, Blaze would be able to run using his prosthetic leg.
We can’t wait to see your progress, Blaze!
