One indication that a dog is neglected is when his/her fur is matted.
Severe matting can cause health problems for the dog. It can cut blood circulation on extremities and it can also limit air circulation. It can also make the skin dry and prone to lesions. Matting can also trap feces and urine smell on the dog’s body.
Dogs with long fur need regular grooming. Owners should always comb the dog’s hair to prevent tangling. A well-combed dog’s coat indicates good health.
Hope for Paws, an animal rescue organization located in Los Angeles, California, is very active in looking for stray animals on the streets and giving them a fresh start in life. Eldad, one of the co-founders, is always on the go when they receive a call about an animal that needs rescue.
One of the most memorable rescues that Hope for Paws did was when they rescued Dolly, a poodle.
Dolly had severely matted fur. It was challenging for Dolly to see because the matted hair blocks her vision. When they went to the area to rescue Dolly, Eldad and his team had a hard time capturing her. She growled and barked at them. Even if Dolly showed aggression, it didn’t stop Eldad’s team to rescue her.
After a few minutes of showing Dolly that they can be trusted, Eldad was able to go near her. They were able to touch her and checked if she is a boy or a girl. They were able to put on the snare, and later on, they changed it with Eldad’s lucky leash.
At the rescue center, they bathed Dolly. Her matted fur was also shaved off. It took hours for them to clean up Dolly.
